The New Haven Non-Profit Academy (NHNPA) broadly invests in non-profits and faith based organizations to improve the overall strength of New Haven service organizations. Empower New Haven, Inc believes in capacity building and the benefits of offering a process of activities focused on building an organization’s sustainability and ability to meet its stated goals. Capacity building requires investment in several areas such as human resources, strategic planning, financial management, fundraising strategies, board development, management structure, use of technology, organizational systems, organizational assessments, succession planning and collaboration building. NHNPA Participants attend a series of focused capacity building workshops, and are given one-on-one technical assistance by highly skilled consultants and Empower New Haven staff in areas specific to their organization’s needs. Additionally, participant organizations undergo organizational assessments and develop a work plan for capacity building with their technical advisor.
In 2008, The New Haven Non-Profit Academy tailored the curriculum in order to include trainings for grassroots organizations who work with families and children that serve communities of color in order to reduce incidences of abuse and neglect and the overrepresentation of minorities in the child welfare system. This specialty is supported through a partnership with the State Department of Children and Family. Another specialty area of capacity building focuses on sustainability for nonprofits and faith-based organizations by creating agency endowments.
Since its launch in 2005, The New Haven Non-Profit Academy has invested $1,428,000 into New Haven’s Community Development and Emerging Organizations. This has brought an 85% return to the community. NHNPA Participants have leveraged their technical assistance and mini grants to garner new funds. For example, Christian Community Action won $91,000 in new grant based funding. Youth Rights Media increased its beneficiaries by 60% after re-evaluating its strategic plan, and Community Mediation successfully obtained a $96,645 grant after participating in the New Haven Non-Profit Academy.
