Cohort A: Eligibility Requirements: · Previously-funded Community Development organizations that have completed the Academy training.· The organization must be providing services in one of the following areas of service: Housing and Homelessness, Ex-Offender Re-entry, Rehabilitation Services to those affected by Substance Abuse and/or Ex-Offenders, Elders in need, Children and Youth and Families transitioning from welfare to work.· Administrative salaries and benefits of Full Time Employee’s does not exceed $500,000.· Has an active Board of Directors who has met at least four times in the past year.· Applicants with for-profit arms that do not receive more than 10% of their funding from such ventures and has a clear separation in administration.· Total budget exceeds $100,000.· Organization has been in existence for (5) years or more. Training: Organizations selected to take part in this Cohort will receive class-based training around topics such as Fund Development and Fundraising and Building an Effective Team. The training will meet a total of 2-3 times. . Type of Assistance: Approximately six (6) grants will be made in amounts of up to $12,000. Organizations will be asked to apply in support of a specific capacity-building project. This award will provide organizations the opportunity to receive tailored technical assistance according to their specified area of need. Organizations will be able to work one-on-one with a consultant who will assist in the development and implementation of the specific project. The project must target one of the five critical areas listed below: · Leadership Development· Organizational Development· Program Development· Technology Development, or· Fund Development o Fund Development does not include costs associated with special events, direct-mail campaigns or solicitation of donors.o Funds may not be used for direct service provision or programmatic expenses.o Funds may not be used for inherently religious purposes (ex. Proselytization, religious instruction and worship) Cohort B:
Cohort “B” Grants are aimed at building the capacity of non-profits through training, one-on-one technical assistance and grant dollars. The goal is to provide organizations with an introduction to capacity building and increase exposure to key organizational development topics such as financial management, board development, strategic planning, program evaluation, etc.
Eligibility:
- Organizations that have not been previously funded through the New Haven Non-Profit Academy will be eligible to apply under this cohort.
- The organization must be providing services in one of the following areas of service: Housing and Homelessness, Ex-Offender Re-entry, Rehabilitation Services to Addicts and/or Prisoners, Elders in need, Children and Youth and Families transitioning from welfare to work.

Training: These organizations will attend the NHNPA workshop series and will be given an assessment and a workplan to assist in identifying capacity building needs. Type of Assistance: We will make 4 grants in amounts up to $20,000 to 4 Community Development organizations and 7 awards in amounts up to $4,000 to 7 Emerging Organizations. Attendance to the workshop series is mandatory and grant awards will be based on attendance. Emerging organization grants are targeted toward small faith based, grassroots and community based organizations that lack the formal organization, substantial budget and/or staff of Community Development applicants. Funds must be used in at least one of five critical areas: · Leadership Development· Organizational Development (At least 25% of the award must be used for organizational development purposes)

Cohort C:
Cohort “C” Grants will be aimed at building an organizations service capacity through collaboration. Collaboration is defined as “a mutually beneficial and well-defined relationship entered into by two or more agencies to achieve common goals; it includes a commitment to mutual relationships and goals; mutual authority and accountability for success; jointly developed structure and shared responsibility; and sharing of resources and rewards.” (Collaboration: What makes It Work, Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, St. Paul, MN, 2001)
The collaborative project must demonstrate that the sub-award would enhance or expand the reach of existing programs. This includes moving to a higher level of service, where it is able to assist more people on a sustainable basis, provide same service to a different group of people and/or providing a new social service. Essentially, the intent of this sub-award is to enhance and improve the organizations service delivery and capacity.
Eligibility Guidelines:
- Only open to Community Development and Emerging organizations that have been previously funded through the New Haven Non-Profit Academy and have successfully completed the class-based training program.
- The organization must be providing services in one of the following areas of service: Housing and Homelessness, Ex-Offender Re-entry, Rehabilitation Services to those affected by Substance Abuse and/or Ex-Offenders, Elders in need, Children and Youth and Families transitioning from welfare to work.

Training: The training track will provide organizations with the necessary tools to successfully implement their collaborative projects. They will be given an introduction to the concept of non-profit collaborations and will be given tools to sustain effective and long term collaborations. The training will meet a total of 1-2 times. Types of Assistance: These grants will be awarded to (2) collaborative projects. We anticipate that we will make (2) awards at $45,000 each and will be given to two distinct partnerships of at least two and at most three organizations. The intent of this award is to provide an incentive for organizations to form partnerships that will enhance and expand their direct service capacity.
